IV&V (Independent Verification and Validation) is the process that determines the acceptability of the product resulting from an information technology (IT) project. IV&V is performed by someone not involved in either the development or acquisition of the product. IV&V should have no stake in the failure or success of the product. Successful IT projects include independent oversight to ensure the acquired or developed software is thoroughly tested against established requirements and the end-users are prepared for the business process changes the implementation of new software will engender.

Independent Verification & Validation - A series of technical and management activities performed by someone other then the developer or acquisition / implementation manger of a system to improve the quality and reliability of that system an to ensure the delivered product satisfies the customer's business and operational needs.

Verification - The process of determining whether the product(s) of a given phase in the development cycle fulfill the requirements established during previous phases and are complete, consistent, and sufficiently correct to support the next phase.

Validation - The process of evaluating the product(s) of a given phase in the development cycle to determine their compliance with specified requirements.
